Ten Principles for Understanding the Bible
By Daniel Yordy
1. God speaks His word for us to believe, not to interpret or to fit into accepted theology. When we simply believe what God says as He says it, all doctrinal questions disappear. "Figuring it out" in some human framework has no relationship with what God speaks. 2. The word God speaks has the power in itself of its own fulfillment. Jesus is the Word God speaks. Believing what God speaks and following Jesus are two sides of the same thing. Christ in us fulfills every word God speaks. 3. The Bible is simply a record of what God speaks. God is eternal, the words on the page only represent what God is speaking to us right now. The words on the page can be mis-construed and mis-translated. The words on the page, separate from what God is speaking to us right now, have no eternal value. 4. We cannot "believe" anything God speaks except by a miracle of the Holy Spirit upon us. 5. As we actively believe what God speaks, it is fulfilled in our lives by the inward working of the Holy Spirit, not by outward performance. Legalistic performance and binding people with rules externally imposed cannot fulfill the word God speaks. 6. The New Covenant utterly replaces the Old Covenant. We use the Old Covenant, by the enlightening of the Holy Spirit, to help us understand the New Covenant. At no point does the Old Covenant define, regulate, or add to the New Covenant. 7. Every word God speaks must be fulfilled. Unless clearly stated otherwise in the context, every word God speaks must be fulfilled in the age into which He speaks it and in the place into which He speaks it. Unless clearly stated otherwise in the context, every word God speaks is to be fulfilled in the lives of those who hear Him speak, who believe what He says, and who wait upon Him with confident expectation. This is true through every generation of the church age. 8. Every word God speaks is freely available to all, but we will receive from God the fulfillment only of that which we believe with expectation. 9. There is a time and a grace of fulfillment before this age is finished, but everyone will receive from God to the measure that they have desired, believed, and followed what He speaks. Those who measure God without limit will receive without limit. 10. The words of Satan in the beginning, "Did God really say that!" must be banished from our minds and from our understanding of God. If any shadow of those words are upon our thinking, we cannot believe what God says. I could not have written this list a year ago. Only in the last few months have I come to understand that God speaks plainly and that we are simply to believe what He says and follow Him. "If anyone keeps My word he shall never taste death." (John 8:52) "And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment, so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many." (Hebrews 9:27-28) "He that lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?" (John 11: 26) I believe what you say, Lord Jesus. You have kept my one appointment with death. Let it be to me according to Your word. |
