Fulfilling the New Covenant

Who Is a Jew?
by Rita Robinson

Many Christians talk of a Judeo-Christian order. The two do not go together. The Jewish nation came to its end as Jesus warned them. The Jews have no covenant with God as they formerly had - Moses, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob - to rely on. That came to an end with the bringing in of a New Covenant as foretold by Jeremiah. (Jeremiah Chapter 31 and Hebrews Chapters 8 & 9.)

The book of Hebrews is just that, written to the Hebrews, that is, the Jews, telling them all about this tranfer of the Covenant from the Old to the New. In speaking of the New Covenant, He has made the first covenant (through Moses) obsolete, now that which has become old and obsolete is about to disappear. The book written to the Hebrews explains very plainly how the New differs from the Old, for the New is a matter of faith in the heart to believe rightly. The New brings to fulfillment what the Old was the pattern of. God will deal with man now only through the New Covenant - all mankind, Jew or Gentile, with no exceptions.

Paul asked the question, "Who is a Jew?" His answer is found in Romans 2: 28-29: "For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh; 29 but he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the Spirit, not in the letter; whose praise is not from men but from God." He further said that it is a new creation and faith working through love that avails with God.

In Revelation 3:9 we read of those of the synagogue of Satan who proclaim themselves to be Jews and are not, but lie. A natural Jew in this world can no longer claim to be the seed of Abraham even if he could prove he is one of the tribes of Israel, because Paul, in Galatians, cancels that out. To be baptized into Christ makes all of us one in Christ Jesus and if anyone is Christ's, only then are you Abraham's seed and heirs according to the promise. No longer can one claim a natural lineage; it is only through faith in Christ Jesus. That leaves the unbelieving Jews on the outside as long as they remain an unbeliever. Jesus told them the kingdom was being taken from them and given to another nation. Their house was left to them desolate and they would not receive what Jesus was offering to them for they did not know the day of their visitation. They would see Him no more until they would say, "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord." They remain blind, except for a remnant at this time.

There is one New Covenant for all mankind, both Jew and Gentile. On the night He was betrayed and before He was crucified, Jesus inaugaurated the New Covenant in His blood. Paul says in Ephesians 2 that He has made both one and has broken down the middle wall of partition. So that in Himself He might create both into one new man, thus making peace. And reconcile both to God in one body through the cross. All now have one direct access by one Spirit to the Father.

There are many Christians who believe God is still dealing with the Jews under their Old Covenant and that God is dealing with all others under the New Covenant. But they are in gross error, and are leading multitudes into this error. There is now only one chose people - Jesus is doing the choosing. The Old Covenant served a purpose and for a time, but the New has replaced the Old.

[Those who want to place the natural Jews under any part of the Old Covenant hate the Jews, for the Old Covenant ends with a curse and the only thing it can ever bring anyone is death.]

The word or term "Jew" refers to the tribe of Judah, but remember that there were 11 other tribes that came from the sons of Jacob, from Abraham. Jacob was also called "Israel" - thus the sons of Isarel.

But Paul tells us what a true Jew is - that is, one who is one inwardly, not outwardly. John aslso says there were those who claim they are Jews, but are not. They are liars and of the synagogue of Satan.

The natural Jews had a covenant with God, given by Moses. But they continually broke the covenant and God turned from them. Yet, Jeremiah foretold that God would make a New Covenant with them, not like the one He made with them when He took them out of the land of Egypt. When they refused to believe Jesus as the Messiah, and in the end cried for Him to be crucified, He told them what their end would be.

“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you were not willing! See! Your house is left to you desolate; and assuredly, I say to you, you shall not see Me until the time comes when you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!’” Luke 13: 34-35 “Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a nation bearing the fruits of it." Matthew 21:43. That is the meaning of the parable of the rich man and Lazarus.

Their city and temple would be so destroyed that one stone would not be left upon another that would not be thrown down. In AD 70, the Roman army came in and did just that. God brought an end to their standing before Him, their temple was no more and another has never been built. Their priesthood was no more; now God recognizes a Melchizedek priesthood only.

The entire system of what they were was shaken and removed and replaced by a New Covenant that Jesus instituted the night He was betrayed. That New Covenant is in His blood and for all mankind. It includes no Jew or Gentile, no male or female, no slave or free, all are now one new man in Christ. Christ broke down the partition wall separating Jew from non-Jew. No more could they claim descent from Abraham because of this truth. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed and an heir according to the promise found in the Old Testament. Abraham's seed is Christ, and belonging to Christ makes you the seed of Abraham. Faith is the link.

It makes no difference if you can trace your lineage back to one of the tribes of Israel; it is now faith and belonging to Christ that counts. And that alone is what counts. The New Covenant has new and better promises. It is a matter of the heart, saving faith in the heart. Before Jesus insituted the New Covenant in His blood, those of the natural line of Israel, who tried to keep the law and looked forward to the Messiah were considered righteous by God. They did not refuse Him when He came, but easily entered into the New Covenant and faith. They were of the remnant who are saved in this age.

The rest were and are in unbelief. In the end, all will be saved, but right now, they still remain the enemies of the gospel. A veil remains over their mind and heart when Moses is read. It is only in turning to the Lord that the veil is lifted. For the letter kills, and the Spirit makes alive. The Old Covenant will not work for them; it has been replaced by the New. Those old heavens and earth have passed away, and the kingdom is here now, it comes within.

It is of no help to discuss the politics of the Middle East - God has a purpose for what is going on over there. That does not change the reality of the foregoing Scriptures. Jesus - and especially Paul suffered much persecution at the hands of the unbelieving Jews because he preached the gospel of Jesus Christ and a new creation. We will experience the same persecution. For they hate Christ and the gospel and those of His disciples who dare to proclaim it.

It is not Judeo-Christian, it is Christian. What part does a Christian have with an unbeliever? Come out from among them and be separate - love them and be a witness to them.

There is a new rest also to enter into. The outward has been replaced by the new inward reality. Neither does God dwell in any temple built by hands but within the new creation spirit. The body of a new creation man is now the temple where God dwells. The kingdom is within and the King reigns in His kingdom within. There is the true worship. Jesus called a lot of what men are doing as vain worship, for their hearts are far from Him. It is words only. He said that the true worship God is seeking is a worship in spirit and truth - for God is Spirit.

The world will persecute the Christian, both the unblieveing Jewish world and the rest of the world. They always did and they still do. Unbelieving Jews will not mix with Christians. And Christians are told to separate from unbelievers; there is no fellowship with unbelievers.

Love those who are the enemies of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Do good to them and pray for them.

But do not compromise the gospel otherwise.
